Working At Home: Staying Motivated

Working at home can be a big convenience for some people, but it is also sometimes hard staying motivated at home. Successful people work hard to find their own groove, and find a system that works for them. Though everyone is different, you can use some of these work at home tips to help you succeed in working from home, no matter what your job is.

Separate Spaces
Designate a separate space as your workspace. If you are working at the kitchen table or in another common space, it can be too easy to be distracted by things like the dishes in the sink or the pile of laundry that needs to be folded. If you are not able to set up a separate office space, you could try setting up in an area of the home where you won’t be distracted, or consider working someplace like the library or a coffee shop.

Getting Ready for the Day
Though people often tout the benefits of “working in your pajamas”, that is hardly a good way to stay focused for most people. Instead, try taking the time to get ready for the day the same way you would if you were heading out to the office. Enjoy your coffee and breakfast without thinking about work. Take a shower and get dressed in regular clothes. You do not have to wear a suit or other professional clothes, but put on something other than pajama pants. Style your hair or put on makeup. When you feel professional, you start acting more professional.

The Pomodoro Technique
Staying motivated at home is often about being able to focus when it’s time to work. To do this, try the Pomodoro Technique. Developed by Francesco Cirillo and named after his timer that looked like a tomato, the Pomodoro Technique is a way to stay laser-focused when doing your work. You start by setting a timer for 25 minutes and working for those 25 minutes without distractions. Then, you get a five-minute break. After repeating this cycle four times, you can then take a longer break, around 15 to 30 minutes. Obviously, you can adjust your working and break times as you see fit. The key is to stay focused during the times you need to stay focused.

Fun Money
One of the biggest benefits of working at home is that you are better able to control your income than when you are working a regular job. You can motivate yourself to work harder by designating a portion of your income to be “fun money”. For example, you might set a weekly goal, and any money you earn beyond that goal gets to go into your vacation fund. Of course, you do need to make the money you need to make, but giving yourself permission to use some of the money for something you want to use it for.

Minimizing Distractions
It is difficult to complete your work when you have distractions in the house. If you have children, check out some of our best tips here and here. Do not allow yourself to check Facebook or your email every five minutes. If things are too distracting, you might disconnect yourself from the Internet or install a plugin that blocks certain sites like this one for Google Chrome. Keep the TV off, and do not answer the phone when you are trying to focus on work.

Setting Goals
All the work at home tips in the world will not really help you if you do not set goals for yourself. Of course, the actual goals you set will vary based on the type of work you do. You might have a daily financial goal or a goal to make five sales-related phone calls a week. You might be setting out to double your income or bring more people into your sales business. Whatever your goal is, break it down into smaller manageable tasks that you can do each day. This can really help you stay motivated because you know what you are working toward.

If you want to succeed at working at home, you have to take it seriously. When it is time to work at home, stay focused on your work. The more you see your income start to grow, the easier it becomes to stay motivated.

    I like the Pomodoro technnique. I normally set my timer for periods of 45 minutes, but I found that I always end up getting distracted somehow. I think 25 minutes is a better option.

    I need to organize myself and try to find a place to work other than the living room. It is very distracting to sit there with my cat running around all the time.

    Having a truly dedicated work space can do wonders both for work production as well as your mental status. I see a lot of people that try to work from a laptop in the corner of the dinning room. That can only work for so long and in most cases it is not enough of a separation needed to produce quality work during work hours.

    I wish I’d had the chance to read this article before I started working at home. There were times at the beginning when I would go days without wearing regular clothes, and it really does make you feel sloppy and lazy. Most days now I still choose casual clothes, like yoga pants or jeans, but I definitely feel more organized and focused..

    Great ideas for minimizing distractions. I have a hard time working with my husband in the house. He likes to ask questions every once in a while to see if I’m still here. It was funny for a while but now it’s becoming bothersome. I need to learn to stay focused without interference.

    We have a spare bedroom which currently just holds stuff that has nowhere to really go or storage. i did make a small office area though but it only has Wi-Fi so I can only do certain work down there. The rest I do from my desktop computer in my living room. And yes I do get distracted. I try to do my work when my boyfriend is working that way it feels like I am getting stuff done at least.

    I like the idea of the Pomodoro Technique. I try my best to take regular breaks throughout the day, but sometimes I get so engrossed in what I am doing that I completely forget to take a break. Getting up every once in a while is good not only for you physical fitness, but also helps clear your mind so that you can return to work refreshed. I am definitely going to try using a timer.

    What a helpful article! I made the mistake of when I first started working from home to not have my own office space. I would always use the living room or the dining room to do my work and I would get very distracted. I really like the idea of treating being at home just like a normal work day.

    Keeping the motivation going during the summer is the hardest for me. When the kids get out of school it is almost like something takes over the house. I have started working on some projects long after they are sleeping which helps and it lets me beat the heat too.

      When I still had kids at home, I found it much easier to work before they got up or after they went to bed. I just scheduled my stuff around their schedules. The flexibility is one of my favorite things about working from home.

        I went from having a fully outfitted home office for 8 years to (due to life circumstances) working from the dining area table, in the living room. My 2-year-old grandson completes the arrangement lol. Talk about culture shock. It’s just too distracting to work or even hold a train of thought. Most of my work gets done between 10 pm and 2 am. Things should get better when the little one gets back in daycare. My sense of humor is one of my greatest business assets right now.
